Day one of the event was an introduction to the vehicle and an overview of Nissan’s plans for the new Z Roadster. Even though there was no drive program today, pricing and performance figures were made public as well as the cars specifications.

With a little more power, a less weighty engine and new performance upgrades for 2011, the folks at Ford's SVT performance unit continue to turn the once portly, push-pig Shelby GT500 into an ever-more-legitimate all-around performance car.

Like its V6 and GT brethren, the GT500, which the company is to unveil at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, gets substantial upgrades for 2011, only a year after a major overhaul for 2010. You can think of it as a preemptive strike against the Camaro Z28 that has long been rumored to be waiting in the wings at Chevy.

Not surprisingly, the 2011 upgrades for the GT500 begin with the supercharged 5.4-liter V8, which Ford describes as an evolution of the engine from the now-departed Ford GT. Yep, that means the GT500 now has an aluminum-block engine instead of the stout iron block it has used up to now. This little switch chops off 102 pounds from the burden carried by the front axle of the notoriously nose-heavy GT500.

With characteristic modesty, Mercedes has released details of a convertible version of the E-Class Coupé.
It has become something of a tradition in the Classic Driver office to make fun of press material from the great Stuttgart manufacturer. In the spirit of the holiday season – ‘good will to all men’, and all that – we’ll make no mention of it being “highly appealing and emotionally charged”, nor will we refer to the all-new E-Class range’s ‘motto’ (gosh, that’s a first for the car industry) being "four seasons, four personalities".

Let’s make it clear: this is going to be a cracking car, beautifully built and so well designed that it will do anything you throw at it. Furthermore, its prestige and understated classy lines will be as popular as all preceding four-seat convertible E-Classes. But please, Mercedes, can we make our own minds up about it?

Right, what’s new with the latest in a long, and honourable, line of E-Class cabrios? The standard coupé is an excellent car. In convertible form the company has concentrated on making the open-air experience as comfortable as possible by introducing three new technologies:

The AIRCAP® automatic draught-stop. This is a mechanical solution to the problems of travelling at speed in an open car on a cold day by deploying a windscreen-mounted deflector, a net in the windscreen frame and a draught-stop between the rear seats. The occupants should therefore be able to travel in a bubble of insulated air helped by...

The modified AIRSCARF® neck-level heating system. This builds on Mercedes’ already class-leading air management system in open-top cars. It is integrated into the backrests of the front seats, providing warm air through outlets in the head restraints.

Very clever stuff, however even Mercedes cannot stop it raining so when the hood is raised it will be very quiet in the cabin due to the new model’s acoustic soft top, fitted as standard.

The E-Class Coupé is already one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars in its class. The Cabriolet has an impressive cd figure of 0.28 which, the company claims, is the ‘best in its class’. This is what we want to hear from Mercedes: more technical brilliance, less hyperbole for lazy websites to copy and paste.

You know the deal with Maranello – money talks. If you have a practically unlimited budget and impeccable breeding the fabled F1 team’s road car division can be awfully accommodating to your design whims.

Enter Edward Walson. Doesn’t sound familiar? Well, that’s hardly surprising.

Chasing a TV dream?

Edward’s not a celebrity in his own right but his father John did invent cable TV and you can only imagine the inherited financial resources at Edward’s disposal.

So, when Edward decided he wanted a contemporary Ferrari custom built (to pay homage to the legendary Fantuzzi-designed Ferrari 330 LM built specifically for the 1968 Fellini film, Toby Dammit) it simply had to happen.

Aero duct louvres behind both axles look the business, as does the large aft deck area and superb rear wheelarch curve-line.

The P540 Superfast Aperta is based on Ferrari’s outstanding front-engined 599 GTB Fiorano. Some striking Pininfarina designed bodywork adds 66mm bumper-to-bumper over a stock 599.

Despite being open-topped the P540 is 36mm taller than a 599 and 20kg heavier, the additional weight due to carbon-fibre strengthening to offset the loss of rigidity sans roof.

Traditional V12 values

Powering Walson’s car is a 456kW 5l V12 shifting through a six-speed paddle-shift transmission.

Performance promises to be epic and kudos to Ferrari for producing the complete car from sketching to homologation in only 14 months – just in time to make this Christmas Edward Walson’s best ever.

An interesting aside to the Edward Walson project is that such a one-off Ferrari’s owner receives the car’s tooling as part of the purchase to ensure it cannot be replicated.

Conversely, Ferrari reserves the right to buy back both the car and tooling again, to ensure Special Project Ferraris are not speculated against.

2009 Infiniti G37S Convertible Review

There you have it; everyone is coming out with convertibles that sport a power-retractable hard top. And why not? It allows the car to be driven in all seasons, it provides a quieter cabin and will likely be more durable.

The G37 Convertible is a well-crafted, high-performance machine that looks absolutely gorgeous.

But it also adds weight to the vehicle it’s installed on, not to mention a severe complexity of operation that provokes goosebumps when you think about how much it will cost to fix, if or when it breaks. As for the Infiniti G37, its competitors BMW and Lexus now have power-folding hardtops, so Nissan’s sports/luxury division pretty much had to follow the pack.

Rip-snorting V6
With 325 horsepower, the G37 has nothing to envy from its rivals. Zero to 100 km/h blasts take 5.8 seconds with the 7-speed automatic, while the quarter-mile flashes by in 13.9 seconds at 161 km/h. Those are numbers similar to what the BMW 335i Cabriolet is capable of.

But statistics are just part of the story. The 3.7-litre V6 belts out a growl that’s almost as satisfying as a good-sounding V8. Our fuel economy average of 12.2 L/100 km is what we expect from our mix of city and highway driving.

Unfortunately, the top and its complex mechanism adds a considerable amount of weight — 468 pounds, or 212 kg—and you can definitely feel it, especially when the top is compacted in the trunk. The G37 Convertible doesn’t feel as nimble or lively as the coupe, or the sedan for that matter.

Still, there are more than enough guts under the hood to keep this car entertaining; it just feels a little more like a boulevard cruiser than a sports car. We wish its turning circle diameter would be a little better, by the way.

Premium-grade cockpit
Any Infiniti G is a vision of delight, and the convertible is no exception despite it having a more-pronounced deck compared to the coupe. Top up or down, the car keeps its seductive and sensual silhouette. The only thing that spoils the look a little, is the flexible antenna that’s located right in the center of the trunk lid, like every car in The Dukes of Hazzard.

DCOTY 2009: Best Convertible

It’s been a big year for sports cars. You’d expect the canaries of the motoring world to fall off the perch as soon as the global financial crisis began to take hold, but the segment held on grimly.

And now sales in the segment are bouncing back faster than ever. And the convertibles - the veritable doyens of the lifestyle car segment - are holding their own.

We’ve compiled the pick of the last 12 months’ debutants - three hard-edged sports models - and pitched them against a softer lifestyle option that last year was good enough in every respect to bump out the opposition.

The carryover champion gaining automatic entry to this year’s event is the Audi A3 Convertible 1.8T, a spunky, compact four-seater with strong urban appeal.

Up against that are the reskinned and hard-topped Mazda MX-5, BMW’s one-coupe-and-convertible-fits-all Z4, and the familiar-looking Porsche Boxster featuring a host of major mechanical mods.

But let’s start with our three performance-oriented models.

Not surprisingly, the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre BMW Z4 sDrive35i was the fastest car on our track. Its 225kW of power and 400Nm of torque dominated the other entrants, even if its on-road dynamics were no match for the Boxster.

One judge said BMW had made a better match of the second-generation Z4’s front and rear ends to make it more of a competitor with the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class than push it further down the path of the first-generation’s unfulfilled Porsche-crushing ambitions.

‘‘It’s now more a sports tourer than a sports car,’’ was a familiar theme.

Adding to the softer feeling was the electrically assisted hydraulic steering, with some judges saying it could still give more feedback.

While the Z4’s cabin was universally accepted as the best-looking of any current BMW interior, a lack of small-item storage caused some discontent among judges that had to lug a collection of books, pens, phones and radios between each car.

The Z4 also experienced the most in-cabin wind buffeting with the roof down, which judges said was less than acceptable in a car costing $120,000.

Our MX-5 Roadster Coupe tops a line-up that was cut from three to two a few months ago after Mazda decided to drop the slow-selling cloth-roofed base model.

Judges were generally impressed with the hard-topped version, with only one aspect of the MX-5 attracting widespread criticism — its 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine.

Producing a healthy 118kW — the same power output as the smaller-engined Audi — torque peaks at a relatively meagre 188Nm. Judges, however, just didn’t feel the engine’s numbers were a proper match for the MX-5’s sharp driving dynamics.

On test, the engine was described as noisy and overdue for a step up in the performance stakes. One suggestion was that Mazda should possibly consider a small capacity turbocharged engine to bring some sizzle back to the experience.

On the positive side, the MX-5 had the fastest-moving double-action roof.

As discussions wound up, one judge also questioned the MX-5’s price. ‘‘I just can’t see $50,000 worth of value in that car,’’ he said.

Our last car was the Boxster, the entry-level car in Porsche’s soft-topped cabrio range.

It may look almost the same externally, but underneath is an all-new 2.9-litre boxer engine producing 188kWand 290Nm. Our test car was also paired with the new seven-speed twin-clutch automatic gearbox.

Purists will always lean to the manual gearbox, but aside from a few low-speed quirks, our judges were more than happy to stick with the auto - but not the steering wheel mounted rocker shifters - for its ability to consistently pick all the right gears at all the right times.

Judges were also impressed that with the addition of more standard features such as satellite navigation, buyers were finally getting a level of kit in keeping with a $110,000 car’.

‘‘At that price it’s now a competitive car,’’ one said. ‘‘It’s now only a few kilowatts short of the original Boxster S, and it’s quicker and more fuel efficient.’’

That aside, the Boxster did have its problems. Small item storage in the cabin was described as poor, and the sombre cabin struggled to make judges feel special.

The Boxster, though, impressed with its ability to open or shut the roof at speeds below 60km/h.

If there was one clear message coming from talk about the Audi A3 Cabriolet 1.8 TFSI, it was practicality.

‘‘Audi builds the only cabriolet that you can fit a ladder in,’’ one judge said about last year’s category winner. ‘‘It’s just a practical car.’’

The A3’s turbocharged 1.8-litre engine shares the MX-5’s 118kW power output, but torque jumps to an impressive 250Nm.

Overall, judges were still impressed with the ability of the small engine that beats at the heart of the A3. ‘‘It’s so fantastic that it makes the A3 feel faster than it really is,’’ one judge commented. ‘‘It doesn’t need any more performance.’’

The A3’s four-seat layout curried favour with judges as one of the better examples of a cabriolet that did not make any compromises in versatility.

Once comment late in the discussion summed it up best. ‘‘With the A3, Audi has honed in on the target market. But the good thing is that Audi hasn’t needed to dumb it down.’’

So far it’s an interesting four-way contest, with the judging criteria helping to level the field between four very different creatures, each with their relative strengths and flaws.

In the end, though, it was reduced to a two-horse race, with the BMW rubbed out early for its loss of focus and disappointing cabin turbulence with the roof down, and the MX-5 impressing with dynamics but underwhelming with performance.

That left last year’s carry-over champ, the Audi A3, up against the iconic Porsche Boxster.

In the end, though, the Boxster’s all-round ability to make our judges smile was enough to push it ahead of the A3 in one of the narrowest of winning margins — a one-vote majority.

2010 BMW 650i convertible is a grand tourer

The model year on the BMW 650i is 2010, but this lengthy, smooth-riding, luxury coupe and convertible feel a bit like yesteryear.

Theres the old BMW styling, with a back end that looks subtly "smushed" in and headlights that seem sliced off at the top. The roof is fabric and contrasts with the current trend of retractable hardtops on the latest, newest convertibles.

Inside, theres a clunky afterthought of a cupholder that has to be manually put in place next to the front passengers left leg and a back seat that can be cramped even for children.

And under the 650i hood is a premium gasoline-gulping V-8 that, when mated to a manual transmission in the convertible model, activates the federal governments gas guzzler tax and adds $1,300 to the cars price tag.

No wonder the 650i, sold as a two-door coupe and convertible, is BMWs slowest-selling car.

Indeed, with U.S. sales through the first 10 months of 2009 totaling just 3,207 cars, the 650i models are on track for their worst annual U.S. sales tally since the current 6-Series generation models debuted in calendar 2003.

Starting manufacturers suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $79,025 for a 650i Coupe. The test car was the 650i Convertible with a starting retail price, including destination charge, of $86,125.

Both coupe and convertible come with 360-horsepower V-8, standard six-speed automatic transmission as well as a raft of amenities including onboard navigation system, bi-Xenon headlamps, leather-trimmed seats and an audio system with a minimum of eight speakers.

In comparison, the 385-horsepower, 2010 Jaguar XK Coupe starts at $83,000, and the XK Convertible has a starting retail price of $89,000.

It was surprising to see how long the test 650i Convertible was, from bumper to bumper. Stretching nearly 16 feet, it was longer than the Chevrolet Equinox sport utility vehicle that I had tested the week before.

Yet, for all the length, the two back seats of this BMW were noticeably tight. With the roof on, there was only 36.5 inches of measurable headroom because of the sloping roofline. Legroom can be nearly nonexistent, depending on where the front seats are on their tracks. For the record, BMW reports an "effective" rear legroom measurement of 29 inches, while front-seat legroom is a generous 42 inches.

The interior is nice, in standard BMW fashion. For 2010, the automakers infamous iDrive control system for such things as navigation, telephone, audio and ventilation is improved by the addition of more buttons and a more intuitive series of onscreen menus.

I still had to get the hang of how to work this new, fourth-generation iDrive with its central knob and buttons. But the learning took far less time than on earlier iDrives, and it seems as if iDrive is slowly evolving to be more akin to the friendlier interface that Audi uses in its cars. Yes, theres more clutter with more buttons on the dashboard, but they save a driver from having to search zealously for the correct menu on the 8.8-inch screen.

Front seats in the test convertible were cushioned, yet firm, and had a rich appearance plus at least a dozen power adjustments.

The Convertible comes with sun reflective leather on its seats which BMW says is treated to reflect the suns rays and thereby reduce the heat that the seats absorb. Its also on armrests, head restraints and the gearshift lever — places that a driver or passenger would touch.

The best part of the 650i Convertible tester was the oh-so-smooth ride and propulsion. This convertible traveled with a luxurious sense. Its suspension both managed the considerable body mass and provided a rather supple transport over road bumps.

This is one BMW thats not so much sporty as it is refined. There was no body shimmer or windshield shake as there is in some lesser convertibles. I barely noticed I was in a convertible and not in a car with a rigid roof.

At more than 4,200 pounds, the 650i Convertible felt hefty, but the 4.8-liter, double overhead cam V-8 moved it along well. There wasnt an out-of-control thrust of power when I pressed the accelerator pedal as much as there was a steady surge of power that propelled the car forward smoothly.

Torque peaks at 360 foot-pounds at 3,400 rpm, and while several other luxury cars top that number, the BMW has a gracious, rather than raw and unruly, sense about its power.

Fuel mileage is the pits, however. The tester with automatic transmission had a federal government mileage of just 15 miles per gallon in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway. I averaged less on both counts and realized that some SUVs do better with gas mileage than I did in this four-seat car. With the 650i models calling for premium gasoline, it can cost upwards of $55 today to fill the 18.5-gallon tank and travel maybe 300 miles.

I liked the nifty rear window in the convertible that could be opened or closed no matter if the roof is open or closed. Trunk space was a welcome surprise at 12.4 cubic feet with the roof on the car. It shrunk only a bit — down to 10.6 cubic feet — when the roof was stowed.

Standard safety equipment in the 650i Convertible includes antilock brakes, electronic stability control and even knee air bags for front-seat passengers. These air bags help keep passengers properly positioned during a crash impact.

The roofless pony car is a natural extension of the coupe, though lifting the lid has a bit of a lengthening effect, somewhat negating the standard car’s aggressive lines.With the luxury of four seats, and the advantage of being box-fresh, we don’t doubt that if the price is in line with Ford’s Mustang, Chevy will be able to sell a boatload of these ragtop Camaros.

With BMW squarely in its sights, the drop-top version of Lexus' hot sedan drew crowds at the Paris auto show. But the early reaction we overheard at the show indicates a polarized opinion of the car's styling. There's no doubt, however, it's a technological masterpiece, with its choice of two V-6s -- 204-horsepower or 306-horsepower -- and a three-panel aluminum roof that operates in just 21 seconds. The design is similar but different to the sedan, as just the mirrors, headlamps, hood and door handles are the only components shared by the two models. Perhaps it's the extended rear overhang, designed to deal with the folding top, that turns off some observers, but we'd be happy to be seen cruising PCH in the sporty drop-top after it goes on sale late in the first quarter of 2009.

Why it Matters

The Lexus IS 250 convertible is a hardtop convertible based on the IS 250 sedan. While the Lexus IS 250 Convertible is a two-door, Lexus has no intentions of releasing a coupe version of the IS 250, only the hardtop convertible and sedan versions. The Toyota luxury brand has made a point of going after the European luxury market and looks like it is now ready to take on the likes of the BMW 3-Series Convertible and the Mercedes-Benz CLK Convertible. If the past is any indication of what the future will be like with a Lexus IS 250 Convertible in the mix, the Europeans should be worried.

What it Looks Like

What it looks like with the hardtop in place at least is a Lexus IS 250, minus two doors of course. When the hardtop is folded it will eat into the trunk and rear seat room, but it will have a rear seat, so the proportions should be about the same with longer doors making up the difference and easing access into the rear seats.

All we really know at this point is the IS 250 will come with the Lexus 2.5-liter V-6; thanks Lexus for that easy-to-use numbering system. Speculation is that an IS 350 will follow with the obligatory 3.5-liter V-6 and Lexus enthusiasts are hoping for a V-8 powered IS-F convertible to join the fray as well

What We Think

Convertibles rock, even more so when they are retractable hardtop convertibles. With the best of top down fun and hardtop security all rolled into one package we’re sure the Lexus IS 250 convertible will be a hit and give the BMW 3-Series Convertible and the Mercedes-Benz CLK Convertible a run for their money. Although it is still likely to be a pricey proposition, it should come in at a better price making it a value as well.

The Camaro, born 40 years ago as Chevrolet’s reply to the pioneering Ford Mustang, is coming out of retirement (since 2002) for a new fight with the namesake ponycar. It’s set to bow for 2009 in at least two coupe models-V-6 and V-8, perhaps called RS and SS, respectively. Convertible versions join up for 2010. Chevrolet confirmed these plans after splashy concept previews at the 2006 and ‘07 Detroit Auto Shows. Recalling the days when the Big Three were still big players, Dodge is reviving its Nixon-era Challenger (1970-74) for 2008.

General Motors decided to bring back Camaro when the redesigned 2005 Mustang fast proved a hot seller. But Mustang sales have lately cooled, despite the addition of potent pump-primers like the Shelby GT500. Blame record gas prices and renewed public concern over what thirsty vehicles do to the environment. Ford Motor Company’s many well-publicized travails are another factor. All this leads some industry-watchers to think the new Camaro could end up chasing a vanishing market, especially as GM still has troubles of its own.

Convertible or coupe, the reborn Camaros will be much like the concepts, only less exaggerated. Wheels, for instance, will probably be no larger than 20 inches max, versus the show cars’ 21s and 22s. Trim and paint will be toned down too. Otherwise, styling will be the concept blend of today’s Chevy Corvette and cues from the 1969 Camaro, resulting in a more-modern look than either the current Mustang or upcoming Dodge Challenger. The new Camaros should also hew closely to concept dimensions. That means about 7.5 inches more wheelbase than the 2002 models, a similar amount trimmed from overall length, and about 5.5 inches more width. These changes should produce a roomier four-seat cockpit, though space in back (and in the trunks) will remain tight.

The new-for-2010 Lexus IS 250C and IS 350C are convertibles and the first open-top models in the IS line. With styling reminiscent of the IS sedans, a power-operated hardtop roof that opens or closes in a scant 20 seconds, seats for four, V-6 engines and lots of features, the new convertibles are easy transporters that provide a bonus — a suntan.

Among luxury cars with retractable hardtops, the IS convertibles might be considered affordable, if a price of $40,000 or so can be defined that way.

Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $39,365 for an IS 250C with 204-horsepower V-6 and manual transmission. Add $1,170 for an IS 250C with automatic.

But arguably the best of the bunch is the IS 350C, with its larger, 306-horsepower V-6. Starting retail price, including destination charge, for a 2010 IS 350C is $44,815. This model comes only with an automatic transmission.

These prices compare with the $44,715 starting retail price of the Infiniti G37 Convertible with 325-horsepower V-6 and shift-it-yourself automatic that debuted in 2009, and the $45,375 starting retail price for a 2009 BMW 328i Convertible with 230-horsepower, six-cylinder engine and manual transmission. With automatic, the BMW price rises to $46,700.

Neither Infiniti nor BMW has announced 2010 prices on their convertibles.

The rear-wheel drive IS debuted about a decade ago as Lexus' smallest car. It was oriented more to younger buyers who want luxury and who might buy a BMW.

The IS was one of the few Lexus vehicles to offer a manual transmission, but sales never reached the levels of BMW's long-popular 3-Series.

2011 Camaro Convertible

The 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible appears to be speeding toward reality, according to Chevrolet Vice President Brent Dewar. He said in a Web chat on the GM FastLane blog late Wednesday that the convertible was privately shown to Chevy dealers this week.

"We are working on the specific timing, but it will come out soon," Dewar wrote.

There were fears that GM would scrap the model as a cost-cutting measure. Dewar was asked if Chevrolet will bring back the Chevrolet Camaro Z28 in 2011, and his response was not encouraging.

"We have not officially decided to bring back the Camaro Z28," he said.

The wide-ranging Web chat covered the plans for a variety of Chevrolet products, including a retail version of the Chevrolet Caprice, as well as the GM brand's plans for the 2009 SEMA Auto Show and upcoming auto shows. Regarding SEMA, Dewar said look for "cool Camaros," without giving any more detail.

"We are finalizing our plan right now [for upcoming auto shows]," he wrote. "Look for [the Chevrolet] Cruze] at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show], more news on our cool small and compact cars throughout the year."

February in Chicago would hardly seem like the appropriate backdrop for the debuting a new convertible but that's exactly where Lexus unveiled the new IS. Fortunately the conditions for the IS-C's on-sale date and first drives are somewhat more amenable to top down motoring. We recently had a chance to spend some time with the new IS convertible in both IS250 and IS350 forms.

Like the existing Lexus SC460, chief rival the Infiniti G37, and of course the BMW 3-series, the new IS C has a retractable hard-top that folds into the trunk. The IS is the second best selling model in the Lexus lineup and in the segment it competes in having a convertible seems a natural fit. Come along for the ride and find out if the IS convertible is for you.

In this case Lexus beefed up the structure around the front of the doors, the windshield frame along the rocker panels. Large new cross-members were added under the rear seat cushion and behind the seat head rests. That rear beam features a pair of fixed steel roll-bars in the unlikely event that the IS goes wheels up.

Volvo C30 and C70 Convertible Get Refreshed

pair of Volvo’s more dapper offerings, the compact C30 and the C70 convertible coupe, have been cosmetically reworked for the 2010 model year. Both were introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The C30 gets a squared-off look. “We wanted the 30 to have more attitude,” said Clas Olhag, marketing manager for Volvo. “Sharp edges in front, the larger, more universal size of the grille. Very subtle changes, because we wanted to keep the references to the P1800.” The P1800, introduced in the early 1960s, was one of Volvo’s few outright sporty designs.

Volvo continues to offer a slightly racier version of the C30, dubbed the R-Design, fixed with side skirts, bulkier spoilers front and rear. Mechanical modifications include a lower steering ratio for a 10 percent faster steering response and 30 percent stiffer suspension all around.

As for the retractable-hardtop C70, it gets a softer refresh. The redo tweaks the front and rear ends, with a wedged-shaped nose, new headlamps and, like the C30, a larger, more forceful Volvo badge on the grille.

Mr. Olhag says that both models have “plenty of opportunities” for options, a marketing tool that the company employed when the first C30 was released. “We call it ‘a product of free will,’” he said.

2009 BMW M3 Convertible

In the case of the M3, the ultimate 3-series, the praise is typically amplified. Well, not so much for the convertible M3. You see, the automotive press has a penchant for very odd vehicles the general buying public simply doesn't understand, so we tend to eschew the cars "normal" people want. As a member of the press, I'm required to beg BMW for an M3 wagon instead of this goofy M3 convertible. The truth is, neither model makes much sense.

Chopping the top off a car doesn't do anything to increase performance, and it almost always reduces performance. It's very difficult, if not impossible, to maintain torsional rigidity without resorting to a bunch of heavy braces. Even then, most convertibles suffer from some degree of cowl shake, and folding hardtop convertibles, like the BMW M3, are prone to squeaks and rattles when the top is in place. Granted, Michigan's roads are particularly harsh on convertibles and most convertible buyers hail from warmer climes where the roads are in much better shape.

Ignoring my personal feelings that convertibles, like sunroofs, are a complete waste of money, the M3 convertible makes sense in a one-up-your-neighbor-at-any-expense sort of way. When driven on a public road, the M3 convertible will do anything the M3 coupe will do, plus the top can come off. There's no real value to this trick other than doing something your neighbor's M3 coupe can't. To some people, that's worth the $67,325 cost of admission. For these people, money is probably not a concern and it wouldn't be impossible to have an M3 convertible for cruising down the coast and a serious track toy in the garage.

The new MINI Cooper S Convertible likewise featuring a 1.6-litre four-cylinder power unit but in this case with maximum output of 128 kW/175 hp thanks to the twin-scroll turbocharger and direct gasoline injection offers even more power and performance, accelerating to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.4 seconds, Top speed, in turn, is an equally impressive 222 km/h or 138 mph.
Average fuel consumption of the MINI Cooper S Convertible in the EU test cycle is 6.4 litres (equal to 36.6 mpg US), and the car's emission rating is 153 grams per kilometre. Compared with their predecessors, therefore, both the new MINI Cooper Convertible and the new MINI Cooper S Convertible offer a significantly higher standard of performance on substantially less fuel and with much lower emissions.

Apart from the fast-revving and powerful engines, modern suspension technology helps to give both new models a new dimension in agile handling. Both the MINI Cooper S Convertible and the MINI Cooper Convertible come with DSC Dynamic Stability Control featured as standard. As an option, Dynamic Stability Control may be further upgraded by the DTC optimised traction mode available exclusively on the MINI as the only front-wheel-drive car with this technology and an electrical locking function on the drive wheel differential.

Safety is raised to an even higher standard, inter alia, by the new rollover safety system moving up electromechanically whenever required. This single-piece rollbar rests almost out of sight behind the rear seats, moving up within fractions of a second only when the electronic safety control registers the risk of a rollover.

Thanks to the design and structure of the single-piece rollbar, the through-loading between the luggage and passenger compartment is particularly large and generous in size, increasing the maximum loading capacity of the MINI Convertible by 55 to 660 litres (23.1 cu ft).

The wide range of options for customising the new MINI Convertible has also been extended once again, new body colours, three different colour and trim variants on the roof and a large number of upholstery options, interior surfaces and trim bars enabling the customer to create his - or her - very own car in his personal style.

Setting out for emission-free mobility: the MINI E.

Yet another MINI highlight at the 2009 NAIAS likewise offers driving pleasure typical of MINI in everyday motoring: Immediately after the launch of a pilot project in a number of US states, the trendsetting MINI E is now being presented to the public in Detroit.

This unique new model boasts an electric motor developing maximum output of no less than 150 kW/204 hp. This kind of superior energy comes from a lithium-ion battery fitted at the rear of this two-seater and giving the car a cruising range of more than 240 kilometres or, respectively, 150 miles.

The energy reservoir may be recharged from any kind of power socket, with power reserves being replenished particularly quickly from a special Wallbox delivered to the customer together with the MINI E.

Extracting a maximum of 28 kilowatt hours from the power mains, the MINI E is able to cover a distance of 5.4 miles on each kilowatt supplied to the car.

The MINI E combines emission-free motoring with agility typical of the brand. Acceleration to 100 km/h or 62 mph comes in just 8.5 seconds, with top speed limited electronically to 152 km/h or. respectively, 95 mph.

Running 500 cars under practical, everyday driving conditions on the road in the USA, MINI will be gaining practical experience through a representative cross-section of users. At the same time the BMW Group will benefit from valuable experience in developing production cars running entirely on electrical power.

Motorsport know-how for the road: the MINI John Cooper Works.

The outstanding performance of the MINI John Cooper Works and the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman are likewise the result of the BMW Group's outstanding competence in the development of new engine technology. The 155 kW/211 hp four-cylinder featured in both of these models comes straight from the power unit raced in the MINI CHALLENGE Clubsport Series. Lexus adds interior technology and exterior enhancements to the 2010 SC 430, the pioneer of the retractable hardtop in the prestige luxury segment.

"To build on the driving experience, the 2010 SC is now equipped with an updated Lexus Navigation System and Mark Levinson Premium Audio System. The enhanced audio package now features iPod/USB connectivity, auxiliary audio input, Bluetooth hands free phone and music streaming capabilities, and an available XM satellite radio receiver (complimentary 90-day trial subscription). On the exterior, the 2010 SC is now outfitted with 18-inch six-spoke wheels with a dark finish, side mirrors with integrated puddle lamps, and Costa Azul Mica is a newly available exterior color," Lexus informed.

Spurred and pepped up by the superb sales of its IS250 C and IS350 C convertibles, Lexus is now working on Lexus IS-F convertible. Yes, the luxury vehicle division of Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation – Lexus is reportedly gearing up to roll out “Lexus IS F Convertible”.

The Car and Driver website has reported that Lexus is building a convertible version of its IS F sports sedan, which will be followed by “F” version of its recently launched 2010 IS C convertible. The website has reported that the Lexus IS F Convertible is expected to come powered with the Lexus IS F sports sedan’s 5.0-liter V-8 and eight-speed automatic transmission.

According to the website, the new convertible versions of the Lexus IS series of sport luxury cars will not be replacing the SC430. The Lexus IS F Convertible will compete with the drop-top BMW M3 cabriolet and even Mercedes. The Lexus IS-F convertible is expected to be launched in the early first quarter of 2011.

The exact price information about the upcoming Lexus IS F Convertible is not available yet. However, the starting price of Lexus IS250 C with manual transmission is $38,480, while starting price of the Lexus IS 350 C with auto transmission is $43,940.

Mini Cooper S Convertible

Since 2001, Mini has of course changed a lot. Although the pre 2001 Mini has the same name and some of the same details, they are both very different cars. It is much more difficult to spot the differences between the early new Mini, and the Mini that is on sale today. The overall look has been maintained, but much of the bodywork, the engine and the headlamps have been altered.

The new Mini convertibles are obviously very appealing. It has been proven that we love drop-tops in this country. You still get the sense of fun that comes with the Mini territory and some of the assets on the convertible bring very useful benefits. For example, changes in the car’s aerodynamics. Also the hood mechanism has been changed, to make rear viewing easier.

The Cooper S is probably the ‘crème de la crème’, of the Mini bunch. Its turbocharger provides it with more torque than the Mini Cooper.

Convertible Minis have been big sellers in the past, but in current economic times, expect more recession friendly alternatives like the Fiat 500 to come into play; especially as it now has its open-topped ‘c’ variation.

The 2009 Smart ForTwo lineup gains a new sporty model. Otherwise, this subcompact car is largely unchanged following its model-year 2008 introduction in the U.S. ForTwo is the smallest and shortest car available for the mass market in North America. The 2010 Ford Mustang GT receives minor exterior updates and nice interior material upgrades. In addition to the improved interior the 2010 Mustang has Ford Sync as a very attractive option. Ford definitely did not break the mold with the 2010 Mustang. It uses the same 4.6-liter V8 up front, same five-speed transmissions behind it and the same live-axle suspension as before. Almost all of the dimensions and most of the hardware on the 2010 Ford Mustang GT remain the same as the previous model. The two previous generations of the Ford Mustang clearly took inspiration from the brand’s prestigious history. The next-generation 2010 Mustang also reproduces several classic elements from the original pony, particularly the gaping, mean-looking grille up front. The result is a machine with some serious demeanor and visual bite that’s ready to take on fresh new challengers… like, well, the Dodge Challenger!

The two previous generations of the Ford Mustang clearly took inspiration from the brand’s prestigious history.

The new Mustang marks a clear evolution from its predecessor. Although styling is pretty similar at first glance, the only things that remain unchanged are the rear side glass and fenders. The rest is entirely new, particularly the front fascia and rear end. The former benefits from a complete facelift that contributes to a bulkier, more aggressive presence.

Of course, the massive 19-inch wheels in GT trim are just as impressive. The taillights, meanwhile, are quite striking at night and their updated design retains the typical three-part configuration. One thing I immediately noticed is the vastly-improved build quality with near-perfect panel gaps.

The interior shows definite progress in terms of material selection as well as fit and finish. Sure, there are still some hard plastics to be found, but they do not feel as cheap as in previous models. It’s a shame, though, that Ford designers used grey plastic instead of genuine aluminum; after all, the 2010 Mustang GT is priced above $40,000.

Hurray for the modern pony
When stepping inside this legendary coupe, one notices the blue-lit Mustang sill plates -- a cool design feature usually exclusive to much more expensive cars. My GT tester also included a panoramic glass roof that floods the cabin with sunlight and mitigates the cramped interior feel, an oversized navigation display, Ford’s SYNC multimedia system, a rearview camera and SIRIUS satellite radio. For the ultimate Mustang experience, I recommend channel 7, which will blast ‘70s music through the 500-watt speakers. It feels so real that you’ll almost grow a mustache.

2010 Ford Mustang GT

Ford caught its competitors flat-footed with the introduction of the retro-styled 2005 Mustang, which was an immediate hit and reinvigorated the sagging "pony car" market. The Mustang's success didn't escape the attention of General Motors and Chrysler executives, who figured they had some retro pony cars in their portfolio, too. So we got a new-old Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger.

Hearing the rumble of those approaching hoofbeats, Ford countered by engineering the first major makeover of the current Mustang since it was introduced. Although at first glance it may not look that different, the 2010 Mustang's body shares only the roof with the 2009 model.

While the exterior was streamlined, the interior received a substantial update, too. Nothing dramatic inside, but it's comfortable, nicely done, and even on the base models, looks and feels upscale.

Under the hood, the two engine choices remain the 4.0-liter V-6, and the 4.6-liter V-8 for the GT model. The V-6 has 210 horsepower, and the V-8 received a modest bump to 315 horsepower. Both are offered with manual or automatic transmissions.

The test 2010 Mustang was a convertible GT Premium, with the optional ($995) five-speed automatic transmission. Though I like manual-transmission Mustangs, this automatic was an excellent match to the V-8. Ford has been using a version of this 4.6-liter V-8 in the Mustang GT since 1996 - it had just 215 horsepower then - but refinements have made it smoother, power delivery more linear. That V-8 exhaust sound is sweet, too, but never overpowering, even with the top down.

And as for that top: It was a conventional soft convertible top that is held to the windshield with two manual latches. Other than that, it lowers and raises at the touch of a button. I was a little disappointed to find more "cowl shake" than I expected - that's the tendency for the body to flex on rough roads or cross railroad tracks, due to the absence of a hard roof's structural contribution to the chassis' stiffness.

Otherwise, no complaints: Ride and handling are excellent, steering a little twitchy but acceptable, brake feel is just right. With the automatic transmission and optional 19-inch aluminum wheels ($1,095), plus shipping ($850), the list price was $38,935. EPA ratings was 17 mph city, 23 mpg highway.

2010 Ford Mustang Joins NASCAR Nationwide Series

At least one ponycar is destined for NASCAR’s Nationwide Series, as Ford confirmed it would offer a Mustang stock car to teams next year.

“We’re excited about the new car,” said NASCAR president Mike Helton. “It’s going to be one good-looking race car.”

Judging by the rendering released by Ford, that last point may a matter of semantics. A lot of the Mustang’s visual identity, especially in the front fascia, seems to have been abandoned in the pursuit of aerodynamic perfection. Still, this is simply a rendering. We’ve yet to see the finalized car, and for that matter, NASCAR has yet to reveal the finalized body template.

“I think race fans--and Mustang loyalists--will be very pleased when we publicly roll out the first car later this fall,” said Brian Wolfe, director of Ford’s North American motorsports operations.

“We had been talking with NASCAR for some time about Mustang as part of its vision for a ‘muscle car’ rollout for the Nationwide Series. We loved the idea, so we jumped on the chance to extend Mustang’s racing legacy to a new series.”

We’re eager not only to see the finalized car, but also to take a look at whatever competitor Dodge may field. Early photos of a test vehicle showed a blunt nose that closely resembled the production Challenger. To date, Dodge hasn’t revealed its new Nationwide Series car, or commented on its future involvement in the series, given Chrysler’s recent financial woes.

First Drive: 2009 Aston Martin DB9 Volante

Who hasn’t dreamt of owning an Aston Martin? Launched in 2005 as a new entry-level model for the brand, the V8 Vantage was intended to bring that dream just a little bit closer for some of us. Now, four years on, it’s got even closer still, with early cars available second-hand at almost half the original £80K asking price.

Built in an immaculate, purpose-designed factory in Warwickshire – where production continues today – the Vantage combines an extruded alloy and composite body with a superb Jaguar-derived 4.3-litre V8 and either a manual or semi-automatic ‘Sportshift’ six-speed gearbox. The resulting ‘baby’ Aston is strong, fast and remarkably reliable – the latter fact being borne out by the number of car hire companies that lend them out to ‘persons of restricted talent’ with few problems.

The V8 Vantage looks as stunning today as it did when it was launched. Understated in a way that other exotics can only dream of, it draws admiring glances from people who would shake their head in disgust at gaudier cars. The standard model’s 380bhp V8 is delightfully revvy, with peak power arriving at 7000rpm, although the lack of mid-range torque does mean extra downshifts are required when pressing on.

Slipping into the well sculpted seat you are surrounded by superb design, the dash uncluttered and very elegant. The start-up message – ‘power, beauty, soul’ – is a bit cheesy, and calling the ignition key an ‘Emotion Control Unit’ is just plain silly, but once on the move these things are soon forgotten. The Vantage’s ride is sharp, but not jarring, giving wonderfully precise control that makes the car thrilling to drive on ‘real’ roads yet relaxing on long journeys. It’s a testament to the car’s superb balance of power and handling that so many owners use their Vantage as a daily driver.

But it’s very usable as a tourer too. The boot is big enough to take a reasonable amount of luggage for the two occupants, while unlike many other cars in this class it doesn’t pretend to have rear seats; instead there is an honest luggage shelf which is ideal for storing nibbles, a camera and papers for a long journey. It’s probably worth putting a map there too, as the satnav is not so good – derived from the Volvo system, it is probably the weakest aspect of this otherwise near-perfect car.

Driving the Aston Martin DB9

Aston Martin DB9 Volante. This 450hp V-12 grand tourer is a wonderfully styled machine with effortless power and an elegant interior. The excuse for rear seats allows a small bag behind you. The lack of a gear shift selector is at first disconcerting, but once shown the push button start, park and drive buttons are easy to use. Gear selection for the 6-speed automatic is via paddle shifters on the steering column. This means they don't rotate with the steering wheel so you don't confuse your shifting. The V-12 starts with a brief bark and then settles into a smooth, quiet idle.

Interestingly, in the Drive mode, the upshifts are very smooth at full throttle. Also, at the speeds I was able to obtain, 6th had to be manually selected. I was a little surprised at the amount of wind noise, but it didn't have a wind blocker behind the seats. The ride was compliant but the weight was evident when turning and a slight amount of cowl shake which surprised me. However, the Aston Martin DB9 was definitely the comfortable cruiser of the group.
